It was Friday – the last day of our househunting trip. We’d selected a house, put down a bid, and been assured (though there were competing bids) that ours was the best. At 8:55 a.m. we were signing in to our son’s prospective high school to discuss his special needs, when the phone rang. The bank had accepted another offer – we’d asked for too long of a closing period. We extended our househunting trip by a day and went back through our list of houses, revisiting some that had almost made the grade. We actually found a better house — for a little more money. Lesson 1: forclosure banks don’t like long closing periods. Lesson 2: be flexible and have a backup list.
